I am writing in response to Rachel Cusk’s review of “Avalanche,” by Julia Leigh, and “The Art of Waiting,” by Belle Boggs (Sept. 4).

For nearly 40 years the majority of reports and books on in vitro fertilization (I.V.F.) have focused on the minority outcome. I.V.F. cycles more often end not with a baby but with failure. The hope that science can outsmart Mother Nature is what keeps people coming back for increasingly invasive, even experimental treatments. The fertility industry continues to grow without regulation or consumer protections. Side effects to medications (many used off label) are glossed over. Statistics are generalized.
